Bring your own Cloudflare (BYOCF) to Optimizely DXP

Complement Optimizely DXP with your own Cloudflare

The Optimizely Digital Experience Platform (DXP) cloud service includes Cloudflare as a packaged component for CDN services and WAF protection. The Cloudflare setup follows industry standards and best practices and is optimised for Optimizely applications.

However, customers previously lacked the ability to control or access Cloudflare features configured and managed by Optimizely, posing challenges for those wishing to implement their own Cloudflare solutions.

Cloudflare for SaaS

Optimizely recently moved to the Cloudflare for SaaS model for its DXP cloud service. This change allows customers to extend the security, performance, and reliability of their website by using their own Cloudflare zone.

Customers can now use their own Cloudflare setup through a configuration called Orange-to-Orange (O2O), which routes traffic through two Cloudflare zones. The settings in the customer's Cloudflare zone are applied to the traffic first, followed by the settings in Optimizely’s zone.

This setup allows customers to benefit from Optimizely’s Cloudflare setup while having more control and visibility of how Cloudflare handles incoming web traffic on their zone.

With O2O enabled, customers can enhance their security and performance via Cloudflare’s advanced capabilities such as,

  • Bot management - to stop bad bots without frustrating users with CAPTCHAs

  • Workers - to deploy serverless code for exceptional performance and reliability e.g. self-hosting the Optimizely Web Experimentation snippet.

  • WAF custom rules - to control incoming traffic by filtering requests e.g. restricting access to the CMS edit and admin interfaces to known IP addresses.
